In the classic comedic duo, the straight man is a stock character who plays it normal, reasonable, and even serious next to his eccentric partner – the funny man, who is usually a goofball.
Think Abbott and Costello, Seinfeld and George, and now…
Manning and Burgundy!
We recently had the hilarious privilege of working on the soon-to-be-famous comedic moment when Will Ferrell, playing Ron Burgundy (AKA The Anchorman), sits behind the ESPN Sports Center desk and interviews Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.
While Burgundy asks some insanely stupid questions, Manning does a great job playing it straight – displaying excellent timing, delivering some good lines himself, and cracking up quite often (who wouldn’t!)
I guess he’s used to crazy questions from the media!
The shoot was certainly fun, and the biggest challenge other than mitigating the varying light and extremely echoey sound of our location, was to keep from laughing out loud!
This will be first airing Thursday December 5th, 2013 at 6PM Eastern (or so) on ESPN.
In the meantime, here’s a clip
